Trail Descriptions Kentucky Camp This easy ride begins in the Coronado National Forest at Gardner Canyon and follows the Arizona Trail north to Kentucky Camp, (link) the best preserved mining camp in the country which consists of four adobe buildings constructed in 1901. (link) This is a complete loop ride and offers a relaxing ride with majestic panoramas, history and old mines. Oak woodlands, rolling hills, grasslands and valleys. 5,000 to 5,500 ft elevation. Rosemont Trail This easy ride begins along the Box Canyon Road and follows the Arizona Trail north to the Las Cienega National Conservation Area. (link) Scenic views, grass lands, and oak woodlands. 5,000 ft elevation. Bear Springs This moderate ride begins in Gardner Canyon and follows the Arizona Trail south to Bear Springs. This trail follows along Gardner Creek and a water system that was constructed around the turn of the century to support mining operations. Mountain vistas and a challenging by-pass highlight this ride to one of the few permanent springs in the area. Oak/Pinon woodlands, pine forests, and intermittent creek. 5,000 to 6,000 ft elevation. Empire Ranch This easy ride begins at the historic Empire Ranch in the Las Cienega National Conservation Area. Established in 1876, the Empire Ranch once consisted of vast holdings totaling almost a million acres. Today the remaining 42,000 acres are managed for public use by the Bureau of Land Management. With vast areas of open country, this ride offers riders the opportunity to spread out and is a complete loop ride. Panoramic vistas, rolling hills, grasslands, oak woodlands and historic buildings. 4,500 to 5,000 ft. North Canyon This easy ride begins at Oak Tree Canyon in the Las Cienega National Conservation Area. This is a complete loop ride. Scenic views, grasslands, and rolling hills. 4,500 to 5,000 ft elevation Cottonwood Well This easy ride begins at Cottonwood Well in the Las Cienega National Conservation Area. This is a complete loop ride. Open grasslands, giant cottonwood trees, river beds, and open valleys. 4,500 ft elevation. De Anza Trail This easy ride begins at Tubac, Arizona, south of Tucson along Interstate 10 and travels along the Santa Cruz River to Tumacocori National Monument following the De Anza Trail. Canyon This moderate ride begins in the Coronado National Forest
along the Box Canyon Road and connects portions of the Arizona Trail
system through Enzenburg Canyon and Melendrez Pass. This is a partial
loop ride that provides rapid changes in elevation for spectacular views
of the Santa Rita Mountains, Empire Valley and Whetstone Mountains.
Historic mining operations, oak/pinon woodlands and ponds. 5,000 to
6,000 ft elevation. Sawmill Canyon This challenging ride begins in Cave Canyon and travels up Sawmill Canyon to an outstanding mountain top vista at 8,000 ft. This is a partial loop ride in the national wilderness area with steep climbs and narrow mountain trails. Some walking is required. Breathtaking vistas, pine/fir forests, permanent creek and springs. 5,000 to 8,000 ft elevation. Crest Trail This challenging ride begins in Cave Canyon and ascends the Santa Rita Mountains from south to north along the Crest Trail. This is a complete loop ride in the national wilderness area of the Coronado National Forest with steep climbs and narrow mountain trails. Some walking is required. Unbelievable views of distant mountains, nearby cities, and southern Mexico. Pine, fur, and aspen forests, intermittent creek and winter snows. 5,000 to 9,000 ft elevation. |
